how do ovulation predictor kits work?
i have heard about these ovulation predictor kits. i know that if i go and buy a kit it will tell me all about it. but i am waiting. so i was just wondering how these kits work, and what you do.
Ovulation predictor kits detect your LH surge. Once your surge is detected, you are likely to ovulate anywhere from 12-48 hours later. LH is the last hormone to surge before ovulation happens. They work the same as pregnancy tests. You pee on the stick and either get a positive or negative. A positive means you have detected your LH surge and are about to ovulate. A negative means you are not ovulating yet. They basically give you a heads up on when to have sex to boost your chances of conceiving. I would highly recommend them to be sure you get your timing right. Clear Blue Digital and First Response are good, I've heard Target brand are fine as well. Do Ovulation Predictor Kits actually work?
I have been TTC for a very long time, 5 months or more, and I'm considering maybe investing in an OPK..
is it worth my investment? Do these things actually help you to pinpoint your time of ovulation?
I hate to say it, but 5 months is not that long for ttc. I've been trying since Jan. 07, and there are many other women who've been trying way longer than that...but anyhoo back to your question...
OPK's vary from woman to woman. I've used the 'Answer' brand OPK and it worked for me twice. Unfortunately both pregnancies ended up in m/c. 
The way this one works - depending on the length of your cycle-you start testing the day after your period ends. You test daily and when your test line is the same color or darker than the control line you will be ovulating for 24-36 hours and should be BDing during this time. Ideally you want to BD 2-3 days before you ovulate to up your chances of conception, because sperm can stay alive for up to 5 days in fertile CM.
