Getting Pregnant Ovulation

How is it possible to get pregnant *after* ovulation?
Hi, guys!
After reading and answering some posts, just recently, that were related to pregnancy, I started thinking about something and have managed to confuse myself. ![]()
I know it is possible to get pregnant *anytime* during your cycle and that your best chances are around ovulation...*but* since the egg only lives for up to 48 hours after ovulation, how *could* it be possible to get pregnant afterwards? Does that make sense? It would seem that there wouldn't be a viable egg after that point so how is it that women can still get pregnant even the day before the start of their period if they had already experienced all of the signs of ovulation, including using prediction kits, almost 2 weeks prior?
I am not trying to conceive. I am just trying to understand it logically, I guess. It seems to me that once that egg didn't survive, chances of pregnancy for the rest of that month should be over. I am so confused. :-S
Thanks!
Persephone...
You are pretty close to being correct in your thinking. Here's the deal. Once an egg is released, it only lives for 12-24 hours (not 48). If it's not fertilized, then it disintegrates and is flushed out with your period.
You only ovulate ONCE per cycle. Don't listen to anyone who says they ovulated twice or more in a cycle, it doesn't happen.
Okay, so here's what people are talking about. When they say you can get pregnant anytime in your cycle what they mean is you can OVULATE anytime in your cycle. It is true, most women have a regular pattern, BUT, nothing is etched in stone with Mother Nature as you know. Some months we may ovulate later or earlier than anticipated. And when this happens, if you are not careful, you can get pregnant unexpectedly. On the reverse, this is why having irregular periods makes it so hard to conceive for some women...because they never know for sure when they are going to ovulate.
So, it's not that you can get pregnant anytime, it's the you can ovulate at any time, making pregnancy possible. But once you ovulate in a cycle, that's it. You don't do it again until the next cycle.
Hope this helps! It was a great question.
Good luck.

question about getting pregnant and ovulation?
ok so me and my boyfriend are trying for a baby my periods are very irregular
we started trying on saturday and today i got my period
my questions are:
is there any chance i could be pregnant?
what is ovulation?
can you get pregnant anytime during your menstrual cycle or just when ovulation occurs?
and how do i work out when the best days for me and my boyfriend to try for a baby are?
thank you so much xxx
Firstly, start taking a prenatal vitamin. This will help prevent birth defects in your baby, and will make you healthier overall. You might also suggest that your partner take vitamins designed for a man, as they can help his sperm, as well.
~ Probably not. Generally in order to support a pregnancy, ovulation should occur 10-14 days before your period. This two week time frame is called the Luteal Phase. If ovulation occurs less than 10 days before your period, you might have a Luteal Phase Defect, which will make it very hard for a fertilized egg to implant in your uterus.
~ Ovulation is when your body releases an egg from either ovary, into the fallopian tube, where it is fertilized. The egg then travels down into the uterus, where it implants into the lining. The trick is to have sperm in the fallopian tubes before ovulation occurs. This increases the chances of pregnancy. So it's important to have sex for a few days (usually three) before you ovulate, during ovulation, and a day after. This is called your fertile window.
~ Only near ovulation time, during your fertile window. However, ovulation time varies from woman to woman. Since you don't know when your fertile window is, I'd suggest having sex every second day - Sex today, skip Wednesday, sex Thursday, skip Friday, sex Sat, etc.
~ Start charting your periods. Since you say your periods are irregular, I'd suggest signing up with Fertility Friend:
http://www.fertilityfriend.com/
It's free and will help you keep track of your cycles. I'd also suggest charting your Basal Body Temperature (your temp first thing in the morning, before doing anything else), and your cervical fluid/mucous. Cervical Mucous changes during your cycles and will show you when your fertile window is, however, it won't always tell you that you've ovulated, and for that, you need to chart your BBT.
http://www.fertilityfriend.com/videos.html
Once you've been charting for a while, you'll start to see patterns emerging, and that'll help you recognise when ovulation is occurring.
IMPORTANT: Since your periods are irregular, you might not be ovulating at all. With some women it's a sign that something is wrong. If you notice that your charting is telling you that you're not ovulating after three months, go see a doctor and get checked out. Irregular periods can be a sign that something is off, but not always. I have irregular periods, but I always ovulated 14-15 days before my period. In fact, since you're trying to conceive, I'd suggest both you and your partner go get checked out before you actually start. Just a general health checkup to make sure you're both healthy.
Lastly, it can take a perfectly healthy couple up to a year to get pregnant. If it doesn't happen right away, you need to keep trying and keep positive. You're also at a disadvantage because of your irregular cycles, but that doesn't mean you won't get pregnant. If after a year, you don't get knocked up, you'll have go to the doctor and get checked up more thoroughly.
Good luck!
